WASHINGTON, D. C., March 7, 2013 — The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) today approved the Medicaid expansion program for Medicaid recipients to expand coverage of the drug Viagra, a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction. This will allow more people to get affordable care through the expanded Medicaid coverage for Viagra.

Casey Davis, Director of the Office of the Director of Health, Human Services. “The expansion program will also help to ensure that we remain a safe and affordable option for people with ED.”
Viagra is a prescription medication that belongs to a group of drugs called PDE5 inhibitors. It works by relaxing the blood vessels in the penis. This makes it easier to get and keep an erection when aroused. Viagra is taken by mouth and is taken about 30 to 60 minutes before sexual activity. The eligibility criteria have been extended to include all men who are 18 years of age or older and who are eligible for Medicaid.

Individuals who are in the family planning program with health insurance coverage under the Medicare program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicaid program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicare program.
Individuals with a child of any age who is in the family planning program with health insurance coverage under the Medicare program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicaid program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicare program.
Individuals who are in the family planning program with health insurance coverage under the Medicaid program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicaid program or in the same family plan with health insurance coverage under the Medicare program.
The coverage may be expanded in any of the following ways:
The expanded coverage may be in Part D or D coverage, a plan with a lower copayment, or a plan with higher benefit. The expanded coverage is a benefit.
