Men in the UK will be able to buy Viagra over the counter after consulting with a pharmacist and without a prescription for the first time today.
ViagraConnect manufacturer, Pfizer, estimates more than a fifth of men aged over 18 in Britain suffer from erectile dysfunction, but almost half of those over 40 have not sought medical help.
The erectile dysfunction drug will be available in 14,000 stores across Britain and via pharmacy websites.
The tablets will be available exclusively from Boots until 10 April.
Those aged 18 and over will be able to buy the tablets following a conversation with a pharmacist or after filling out an online form. Men can ask to speak to a pharmacist in a private consultation room if preferred.
The pharmacists will determine whether treatment is appropriate for the patient and give advice on erectile dysfunction, usage of the medicine and potential side effects. They will advise men to consult with their doctor no less than six months after buying Viagra so that any potential underlying conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease can be investigated.
A Boots spokesperson said that the man affected by erectile dysfunction should buy the drug themselves wherever practically possible.
Men with severe heart problems, those at high risk of heart problems, liver failure, kidney failure, strokes or those taking certain other medicines, will still need to be prescribed the drug under the supervision of a doctor.
A four-pack of the tablets will cost £19.99 and an eight-pack £34.99.
Men who buy it will be advised that they can take a 50 mg tablet an hour before having sex, but should not use more than one pill a day.
Viagra is is already available as an NHS prescription free of charge for those eligible not to pay for their prescriptions.
The pharmacist will decide how many packs will be supplied in a transaction.
The Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) announced in November it was to steer men away from buying the tablets from. In 2016 £17m worth of unlicensed and counterfeit Viagra was seized.
Kristie Sourial, Pfizer’s medical manager, said: “It’s important to remember that erectile dysfunction is a medical condition, and that the impact often goes beyond the physical symptoms – it can lead to men feeling anxious, depressed and lacking in confidence.
“Our hope is that the availability of Viagra Connect in pharmacies will encourage men who do nothing about their erectile dysfunction to seek help, and encourage those who are inclined to seek help to do so sooner.”

Viagra, the drug that millions of men use to treat erectile dysfunction, may not be the first choice for most men with erectile dysfunction, researchers say.
The study, published in theArchives of Internal Medicinefound that men taking sildenafil, the generic form of Viagra, were less likely to report erectile dysfunction, or erectile dysfunction in the first three months after they start treatment. This is the first of a new group of studies that compared Viagra to Viagra®.
Sildenafil was the active ingredient in the blue pill and Viagra was approved by the FDA for treatment of erectile dysfunction. It is only FDA-approved for use in the United States.
The findings were based on a study on men aged 18 and over who took the blue pill and reported erectile dysfunction. The researchers were able to measure whether they would get more than a 70 percent success rate from the two drugs.
The study was conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of California, San Francisco. It is being presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Medical Association.
Viagra was the drug that the study’s lead author, Dr. John Vaz, noted. He said that while the drug may have an effect on erectile function, it does not work in the same way.
“What we see is the drugs working on the same mechanisms as the drugs they are treating. It is very similar to the effect of a pill that was on the same dosage. It is very similar to the effect of Viagra,” Vaz said.
“Our findings showed that men who took the blue pill had less sexual desire and, in addition, they had less erectile dysfunction,” Vaz said.
The findings also showed that the effect of sildenafil was similar to that of Viagra and that men who were taking the blue pill had fewer sexual encounters.
“It is important to note that the effect of Viagra is still there and that this is an open label, controlled study,” he said.
Sildenafil was the active ingredient in the blue pill, and Viagra was approved for use in the United States by the FDA in 1998.
Dr. Robert H. Beaumont, an associate professor of urology at the University of Minnesota, said the study did not prove that Viagra had a positive effect on erectile function, and he didn’t believe the drugs worked for men who had been taking them for years.
“We do think that there are a lot of factors that are related to erectile dysfunction that are important for men to have,” he said.
While the drug has had an effect in studies of men who have been taking the drug, he said, it has not been a positive effect for men who have never used it before. There is also a lack of research to show that Viagra is effective for the majority of men, he said.
“Our findings on the impact of Viagra on men with erectile dysfunction are very promising,” he said.
The study is the first of a new group of studies that compared Viagra to Viagra® and the effects were similar.
Viagra was the active ingredient in the blue pill and the study’s lead author, Dr. John Vaz, said he was surprised by the results.
“It’s a great study,” Vaz said.
“But it does show that the men taking Viagra are less likely to report erectile dysfunction. That is something that has not been proven and we would not recommend it,” he said.
Viagra was approved by the FDA in 1998.
